June Reading Wrap-Up!

June Wrap-Up!

Y'all! This has been a great reading month! I read 12 books in June and one of them was one of my absolute favorite books of the year!!! In the height of summer break, I have been in the mood to read everything. Through all of June, I pretty much picked up another book right after I finished the one before it. Since there are so many books to talk about, I won't ramble on here. BUT, before I talk about my books, a quick update, I just got back from a trip to Washington, D.C.! I went to visit AA, because she's there doing an internship. I'm going to make a post all about the trip, so I hope y'all look forward to that! ~Em

This is one of my new favorite books of all time! This is the second book in the Six of Crows duology and I FREAKING LOVED IT. I usually don't enjoy sequels as much as I do first books in a series, but man was this one amazing. I fell in love with the characters in this duology and the story was captivating. I could gush on and on about how much I loved this book, but I will just say I have not stopped thinking about this book since I finished it at the beginning of the month. Also, I would die for Kaz Brekker. That is all. Rating: 5/5!

This book tells the story of Charlie, who is forced to go to fat camp, and when he comes back, he is battling his weight and the feelings he has for his new neighbor. I did not like this book. It's not very memorable to me at all. I did not like the way some of the topics were handled, including the discussion, or lack thereof, of eating disorders. I didn't like the writing style and didn't feel like there was much of a plot.  Rating: 2/5

Y'all this is another favorite of the year! This is the fourth book in the Wayward Children series, and it's another prequel book, this time following Lundy's story, who was a character in the first book. This is my favorite one of the series so far. I connected with Lundy on a spiritual level. She is someone who abides by the rules throughout her life, and the portal world that she goes to is the Goblin Market, which functions through wagering and bartering. I loved Lundy's character and this story and reading about the Goblin Market and how debts were earned and repaid. It's funny because Lundy's character was not memorable to me at all in the first book, but I fell in love with her back story. Rating: 5/5!

I finally read the last book in The Bargainer series this month. It wasn't my favorite book in the series, but I just love the main characters, Des and Callie, so much, so I enjoyed seeing how their story ended. I think the ending was a little convenient and a little too happy, given the subject of the books. However, these main characters deserved a happy ending after all the crap they went through in this series. The Bargainer books are such quick reads for me, because they are funny and gripping and I just love them a lot. Rating: 4/5

I was pleasantly surprised by this read! This was a random purchase from thriftbooks after it was recommended to me on GoodReads, and it sat on my shelves for a super long time, because I just wasn't drawn to it. I decided to pick it up this month though, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's about a world where everyone has moved to exclusively using technology for almost everything in their lives. The main character's dad created the education system that everyone now uses and there is some backlash by some people who oppose moving toward solely using technology. The main character doesn't agree with the move toward technology and has to decide how to fight the system. I will definitely be continuing on with this series! Rating: 4/5

Okay y'all, let me admit something that I never, ever thought I would admit. I have become completely OBSESSED with the anime, My Hero Academia. It has utterly consumed my life in the last month or so. There are three seasons of it out on Hulu right now, but I wanted more content, so I decided to try out the manga that the show is based off. I have never read manga before and I was intimidated by it, to be honest. However, I love the characters and story so much, so it was worth delving into the manga experience. The show follows the manga really closely, so it was basically like rewatching the anime, which I was super okay with. You will for sure be seeing more of this manga in my wrap-ups because I love it and it just makes me happy. Rating: 4/5

I picked this graphic novel up at Booksamillion a couple weeks ago on a whim, after flipping through it really quickly in the story and enjoyed the art style. However, I didn't really realize that this was a collection of short graphic novel stories. I liked them quite a bit, but I felt like they were all too short and ended abruptly. This graphic novel made me laugh out loud a couple times and I enjoyed the art a lot though. Rating: 3/5

This one was kind of a disappointment for me. I think it was a little over-hyped, because I have heard amazing things about this book, without really ever hearing what this book is about. It follows a young boy who befriends an interesting girl, from a family of women with magical abilities. I can't exactly pinpoint why I thought this was just okay for me, but it was. I didn't find it particularly exciting and for it being 170ish pages, it was so slow and it took forever for me to finish. I think the magic was interesting, but everything was explained in a very vague manner. Overall it was fine, but I think I prefer Gaiman's middle grade books better.  Rating: 3/5

This is the second volume of MHA. I noticed a few more moments in this edition that weren't in the anime so that was fun to read. The character development is great and one of my favorite things about the manga is that the author inserts character pages where he writes about his inspiration or the process for creating that character and it's just a fun insight into the background of the character. Again, expect to see more of this manga in my wrap-ups because I loveeeee it. Rating: 4/5

This book is about an island that people travel to every summer to witness a rare bird return to the island. The main character is from a family of women who wield magical abilities that present themselves before they turn 18. This year though, the bird, Annabella, is late to return to the island and everyone is in a panic. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The writing was pretty and made me want to turn the pages faster. I did find the story to be quite predictable though. I'm not sure if that's because I was spoiled for one of the major plot points through a trigger warning or not, but the predictability didn't really hinder my enjoyment of the book. Rating: 4/5

Josh and Hazel knew each other in college, but only through pretty awkward run-ins due to Hazel's inability to filter the words that come out of her mouth. When Hazel gets a new job at her best friend's husband's school, Josh and Hazel reconnect. (Hazel's best friend is Josh's sister.) Josh and Hazel become fast friends and keep trying to help each other go on dates, but they always end up disastrous. This book is a lot of fun. The relationship between Josh and Hazel is precious and I enjoyed the dynamic between them so much. This is a new adult romance so the characters are in their twenties and doing more grown-up things with their lives, which I appreciated. I listened to this on audiobook and I would not recommend it in that format. The guy that voices Josh's parts does an annoying, high-pitched version of Hazel's voice in his chapters and it was quite grating. Overall, this is a very cute story though. Rating: 4/5

This book is about Ben. He comes out as non-binary to his parents and they kick them out of the house. Ben is forced to move in with his estranged sister and start at a new school with only six months left before they are supposed to graduate. This is a really important story, as it is about a non-binary teen, written by a non-binary author. It discusses gender identity, anxiety, depression, found family, and so many other great topics. This book was hard to read at times, because Ben's parents don't accept who they are as a person and it's heartbreaking. But overall, there is a hopeful tone and a beautiful story. Rating: 4/5
