The Start of My New Internship

Interning and Other Exciting Things

This week I started my internship at the Ouachita Behavioral Health and Wellness Clinic and boy was it something else! I don't think I've ever felt more exhausted in my life and at the same time, learned so much information. I can't write about a lot of the specifics of my job because of HIPPA and other confidentiality rules, but I can sort of share with you what I will be doing while I am working at OBHAW.

I initially thought that I was just going to be working with the preschool program and I also thought that the CLIMB program was only a preschool program, but after being there this week, I found out that there is both a preschool program and a program for older kids.On the first day, I worked with the preK kids. I kind of just watched and learned what I was supposed to be doing and helped out when I was needed. Most of you know that I enjoy older kids more than little ones, so that first day was pretty tough on me. The little ones are just extremely wild and being the germaphobe that I am, it's hard to get past the snotty noses and putting toys in their mouths and things of that nature. Wednesday and Thursday I got to work with the older kids though, which was much easier for me. The older kids don't have to have as much structure and can keep themselves entertained for longer. We get to take the older ones to activities like the movies and to the park, so that's a nice relief for us interns and staff. Throughout the rest of my time with the program I will probably be going back and forth between the preK rooms and the upper level rooms as I am needed.

I have already been able to witness a lot of behavioral issues and how they are handled both by the kids and the staff. I am getting to apply what I have learned in my Human Development class to what I am seeing every day at work and I think that it is going to be really useful for my future and what I will need to know when I am a licensed counselor! I'm very excited to see what the rest of the internship has to bring for me!

In other news, my birthday is in less than two weeks and with my dad's family I am going up to Northwest Arkansas and gonna go to Crystal Bridges because I've never been there before and my dad and stepmom are running a 5K up there that weekend anyway so we're going to hang out with my other family that lives there and have dinner with them. My mom just had surgery and so I'm not sure what we will be doing with her side of the family, because she will be healing for about a month. I have to be at work at the clinic until 3 on my birthday but after that I will get to go home and hang with my family! Also, I'm not really sure if I have written about this yet, but we are building a pool at my mom's house! They had to bring in 38 truckloads of dirt to build up our backyard to be level and on this coming Tuesday, they are coming to dig the hole for the pool! If the weather stays nice the process will hopefully be finished by the 4th of July!

Stay tuned for more summer time updates and stories! Thanks for reading my blog guys, it means a lot to me! This is my 90th blog post and that's almost hard to believe! You guys are the best for keeping up with my blog! ~Em
